hub crawl tonite 5:15 at the Missouri Lounge.....

Pink Buhnny and I decided to throw together a last minute hub crawl tonight.

First stop is The Missouri Lounge on San Pablo. 5:15ish.
Eventually we will make it to the Kona Club for BnB's birthday party.
Eli's, The Graduate, and Seranader is on the list, and maybe a late night excursion to the White ho too.

So, grab your bikes, head down to the misery and have a round with us.

Venue suggestions for a new East Bay club night

Looking to start up a new club night in the East Bay. Right now, probably just a monthly event. Looking for suggestions on a venue to do this at. Have looked at a few, but none of them feel right so far.

The ideal venue would be:

• In Oakland, Emeryville or Alameda
• Receptive to having a club promoter come in and take over a night (including charging a cover), am willing to discuss a bar guarantee
• Not too big, not too small. Ideally would hold about 100 people and feel packed with that many
• Small dance floor. Limited dj equipment or sound system ideal, but can provide my own
• Outside smoking patio (ideal, but not required)
• Open minded, or at least tolerant of gay people and people who like to dress up in funny costumes
• Easy to work with owners. Don't want a venue that will kick the chair out in front of me while I'm loading in something heavy

Was at Heinold's last night talking with Don. He's throwing a big bash on June 1st to celebrate Heinold's 125th birthday of this Oakland institution. Details to follow, but mark your calendars. Buy a glass for $5 and fill it with beer for $0.05! Live band on the patio.

Curious has anyone been to this nightclub? I read the reviews and Thursday nights, there's no cover charge and live entertainment? Would love to see a group event here. I'm fairly new in this tribe.

Eli's is NOT closed. I was there last Thursday. They are VERY much still open.

Just so y'all know.

Oakland Happy Hour meetup

Hey all. If you're not already a member of Meetup.com, it's time to join up. I organize a weekly meetup called The Oakland Happy Hour. We meet every Thursday at 5:30 (it's OK to show up late or early) at a different pub, just to kick back with new and old friends, tip a few, and go home to our regular lives. Great way to ease into a weekend, and it's always BARTable. This week we are going to Cafe Van Kleef, downtown Oakland (19th St BART). Check out the web site - we are scheduled through the end of March. You can stop by to check us out before officially joining the group - no pressures. No charge to you, although a beer once in a while in appreciation of my efforts to organize this group will certainly be appreciated and accepted.

That leaves some of us gigsvillain peeps with nowhere to go for our karaoke fix on Thursdays!

Does anyone know of any other place or have any other recommendations for our small but fun group???

The Red Hat in Concord!!!

I guess this place use to be Tiffany's or something like that and use to be one of the best hoppin places in Concord, than some old Asian lady ran it into the ground and it got really dead!

Now it is under new management again and the new owner has redone the place pretty good!

It is dark and sexy in there. Suppose to be a sports bar but hasn't gotten all the satellites hooked up yet so still only have the local games, BUT he has new younger bartenders back in there and the girl bartender on Sundays makes the best Bloody Mary's in town!!! She is also there on Monday nights and while the beers are reasonable and top shelf drinks might be a little pricey, she poors her drinks pretty heavy, and did I mention she is fucking HOT!!!???

Has a pool table, getting dartboards, and BIG screen TV's! This guy is working overtime to bring that place that use to be awesome back to life!!!

I'm going to be there Sunday for The Bloody Mary that fucking rocks!!! Who's with me!!!???

Weds 8/8 - SF Mime Troupe and Ricky Lee Robinson in Oakland

Here’s some fun that’s happening tomorrow – Weds 8/8 – wanna join me? I’m psyched to finally see a Mime Troupe show…and quite excited to see Ricky Lee play at the Uptown. Figuring we’ll do a little potluck-picnic-in-the-park action during the play.

San Francisco Mime Troupe presents “Making a Killing”
7pm (music at 6:30) – FREE!
Lakeside Park – Oakland (Grand Ave between Bellevue and Perkins, in the park on Lake Merritt, Oakland)

Ricky Lee Robinson - Jennifer Gentle (Subpop) - The Dodos
8:30 doors/9:30 show - $6 (21+)
The Uptown Nightclub - 1928 Telegraph (19-20th Sts), Oakland

********************
About “Making a Killing” and SF Mime Troupe:
"Part savagely acute political satire, part living newspaper and all broad, tuneful and timely musical comedy, "Killing" is the Mime Troupe's most direct grapple yet with the war in Iraq. It's very funny and equally politically engaged...in the best tradition of agitprop theater." San Francisco Chronicle

"Making a Killing" is one of the Troupe's best... it's a tightly plotted military 'murder-most-foul' mystery..." San Francisco Examiner

The San Francisco Mime Troupe does not do pantomime. We mean 'mime' in the ancient sense: to mimic. We are satirists, seeking to make you laugh at the absurdities of contemporary life and at the same time, see their causes. We’ve done shows about most of the burning issues of our time, generally shows that debunked the official story. We perform everywhere from public parks to palaces of culture, aiming to reach the broadest possible audience.

About Ricky Lee Robinson:
New York-via-San Francisco rocker Ricky Lee Robinson is a one-man band, but not like Prince or Lenny Kravitz or any of those other 'geniuses' notorious for fussily neat-freaking themselves into playing every instrument on their records. Performing and recording several instruments simultaneously—including a foot-controlled three-piece drum kit and a guitar specially rigged with a 'polyphonic octaver' to cover the high and low ends—Robinson’s an old-timey one-man band, like that sad guy in the straw hat at Six Flags whose eye contact you and your punk friends made sure to avoid. But instead of barking out dixieland ditties or knee-cymbal soloing to When the Saints Go Marching in, Robinson uses this unusual performance style to revel in his serious jones for obscure 60s- and 70s-era Nuggets-friendly pop. Busking his heart out in a double-tracked voice reminiscent of a less-sexed Diamond Dogsera Bowie, Robinson’s debut disc of mostly original material (following a 2003 self-titled all-covers release) is sparkling with inspired energy—a record so sunny that two of its nine tracks (Welcome Home Sunshine and Hello Sunshine) speak directly to our solar system’s big (fiery) cheese. While Robinson indulges his love of rare and unusual ’70s pop covers early on here—opening with the heartfelt Crabby Appleton rocker Go Back and Jeans on, a minor U.K. hit by 'Lord' David Dundas that originated as an ad jingle for Brutus Jeans—it’s the seven originals that follow those fun exercises in pop nostalgia that really shine. Robinson’s sharp ear for classic pop chord progressions pays off in spades—whether he’s singing about mysterious ladies (the serpentine stomp-rocker Psychic Woman, with a wicked falsetto Barry-Gibb-on-a-bender hook) or absolutely nothing (Nana Nanana), he fills every corner of Mushu Pork with sticky hooks, reverb-drenched guitars, and the joyful noise of someone doing what they truly love.

7/19 Thursday 6-7:30 pm AFTER WORK EXPLORATION OF TIKI CULTURE, Kona Club, 4401 Piedmont Ave, Oakland.

7/21 Saturday 12:00 noon - 1:30 PIZZA AND LIVE SALSA BAND, Arizmendi, 4301 San Pablo Ave (@ 43rd), Emeryville.

How will you know our group? Look for the lively group with the pink plastic Jesus statue.

Hey there, hipsters, geeks, freaks, nerds and average joes/jennies who live in the Oakland, Berkeley, Emeryville, Alameda area. New to the area, newly single, old friends too busy with kids/work/school/new lover? Tired of going to "The City" every night, and wish you had more “East Bay” partners in crime? Let's form a loose, yet tight social network of people who actually do things together on a semi-regular basis. We don't have to go across the bridge for fun every night--there’s a whole world of adventures to be had right here. But heck, we can also take turns being the designated driver for events in "The City" and dashing for the last BART train.

Things of interest: tiki bars, dive bars, classy bars, live music (Mysterioso, Damon And The Heathens, you name it), events at The Crucible, burlesque, non-mainstream dance (salsa, swing, 80's retro), events at Dolores Park, downtown Oakland warehouse dance parties, grooving at Luka's, trying different restaurants, movies at The Parkway, impromptu post-Farmer's Market picnics and paddle boat races at Lake Merritt, cocktails at Easy Lounge after the Farmer's Market, weird DVD nights with a smorgasbord/potluck of everyone's favorite take out, viewing the lighted boat parade at Jack London Square, yard sale treasure hunts (for Burning Man costumes), lazy Saturday afternoons at Jupiter with pizza/pint/live music, bring your banjo/accordian/klezmer for a backyard BBQ with live music jam session, tour of Hangar One (Alameda), tour of Scharfenberger chocolate factory (Berkeley), tour of Takara Sake factory (Berkeley), roller derby. Let's go!

ALL genders, races, ages, sexual preferences, marital/dating statuses, socio-economic strata, political affiliations, religions welcome. MUSTS: Non-judgemental (see line above), adventurous.

Hi,

I've perused a few of the East Bay tribes, hoping to enlarge my circle of East Bay friends, but so far haven't really figured out how to connect with people on Tribe. So I posted the following on Craigslist, have gotten a few responses, am resposting here, and will plan the first event in the next couple of weeks. Contact me directly if you are interested.
Things of interest: tiki bars, dive bars, classy bars, live music (Mysterioso, Damon And The Heathens, you name it), events at The Crucible, burlesque, non-mainstream dance (salsa, swing, 80's retro), events at Dolores Park, downtown Oakland warehouse dance parties, grooving at Luka's, trying different restaurants, movies at The Parkway, impromptu post-Farmer's Market picnics and paddle boat races at Lake Merritt, cocktails at Easy Lounge after the Farmer's Market, weird DVD nights with a smorgasbord/potluck of everyone's favorite take out, viewing the lighted boat parade at Jack London Square, yard sale treasure hunts (for Burning Man costumes), lazy Saturday afternoons at Jupiter with pizza/pint/live music, bring your banjo/accordian/klezmer for a backyard BBQ with live music jam session, tour of Hangar One (Alameda), tour of Scharfenberger chocolate factory (Berkeley), tour of Takara Sake factory (Berkeley), roller derby. Let's go!

ALL genders, races, ages, sexual preferences, marital/dating statuses, socio-economic strata, political affiliations, religions welcome. MUSTS: Non-judgemental (see line above), adventurous.

I shouldn't have to say this, BUT, this is really "strictly platonic"--not looking for dates!

I discovered this tasty little treat at Pacific Coast Brewery on tap of course. However, we drained the very last of it's keg and it hasn't been seen there since. Anyone notice it at any of your favorite places?

it's from Quebec btw.

Thanks!
who's discovered that she can indeed self medicate with beer to distract herself from cigarettes. I never would have thought it was possible!

Hey, if'n y'all are looking for some East Bay trouble to get into, come down to Eli's for the single most ghetto karaoke in Oakland (which is saying a lot).

Last time, the whole place was empty except for us. It rocked.

Intensely inexpensive beers, friendly staff, relatively few shootings.

Valentines Day SF Pillow fight! spread the word

PILLOW FIGHT!!!
This just in from an anonymous source…making its way back around to the US, a massive Pillow Fight is being planned for 6pm on Valentine’s Day (Wednesday February 14th) at San Francisco’s Justin Herman Plaza (at Market and Embarcadero).
Directions to Justin Herman Plaza
1 Market St

www.pillowfight.info

Rules:
1) Tell everyone you know about PILLOW FIGHT!!!
2) Tell everyone you know about PILLOW FIGHT!!!
3) Wait for the Ferry Building clock to strike 6:00pm
4) Don’t hit anyone without a pillow (unless they want it)
5) Don’t hit anyone with a camera
6) HAVE FUN!!!

(Rain plan: put your pillow in a plastic bag, see Rules 1 - 6)
Please bring only pillows filled with natural materials (like cotton, hemp, and down) and not synethetics which will wash into the Bay and harm marine life, thank you.

2006 photos by Russ Juskalian
Leave it to a place like San Francisco to host the most visible incarnation of the Pillow Fight's flash-mob-esque gathering, and subsequent public pillow fight. I would say that a safe thousand people were milling around Justin Herman Plaza at Embarcadero and Market Streets in Downtown San Francisco. As the Ferry Building's clock struck 6pm, the lovey-rage could be cut with a knife from the air around. As 6pm approached, two lines were formed, people wielding pillows took one last breath of air: and running full speed at one another, a Braveheart-like scenario played out. The feathers were everywhere, pilling up to six inches in some parts.

went there last night with some friends, and then just as they were leaving another friend called me and said "hey we're going to lanesplitter, wanna come?" so I say sure, I'll stay right here.

The racer 5 IPA was superb, and one friend got an obsidian stout which was pretty mean, but good. They have excellent taste in the tap and bottled beers, and their salad and pizza is always good.

There were no less than 4 fixed gear bikes and 1 old Beemer (R75 I think) parked out front when I came in. I felt like I had walked into Zeitgeist in SF. In fact, I've never been at an East Bay pub/bar with a more down and dirty punk SF vibe, and that's a very very good thing. huzzah for lanesplitter!

I never even knew it was there except I decided to turn left instead of right to go to Trader Joe's. Supposedly it has karaoke Friday and Saturday nights at 9. So I'll be staying away at those times. Maybe that's a good place to have a tribe gathering :-)

THIS Thurs 12/21: Will Franken, Loop!Station, Knees & Elbows!

We've pulled off another one!

We've moved our shows downtown to the Uptown in Oakland! 1938 Telegraph, at 19th, across from the Fox Theatre. Easy BART (1 block), and parking around the corner. All-night AC Line 800 bus to SF!

For a mere $6 you can see an amazing show in a great venue, and it's even like going home again because Jean, formerly of the Odeon bartends at the Uptown. What more could you want?

Here's what you get THIS coming Thursday night (not in any particular order) -- remember, it's just a mere $6!

(1) WILL FRANKEN -- If you have not seen Will perform, you will be totally blown away. Sez the NEW YORK TIMES: "What elevates Mr. Franken above your garden-variety comedian is an erudite wit and a highly developed sense of the absurd". Go check him out: http://www.willfranken.com

(2) KNEES & ELBOWS -- "Passive-agressive , bluesish, flamencoesque , cough syrup, monster, waltz music" -- or something like that. An odd mix of musicality, offbeat beats, and Janay Growden Rose's beautiful voice twisting and turning through a roller coaster of music. When you see them perform, you'll come away saying, HUH? But you'll come back for more. People do. http://www.myspace.com/kneesandelbows

(3) LOOP!STATION -- Ten years ago this band couldn't even EXIST! Why not? It's a cello and a voice looped with a cello and a voice and a cello and a voice and a cello and a voice, LIVE before your ears. Yes, they build a song from two instruments into a string quartet and choir. Robin Coomer and Sam Bass. One woman, one man, one voice, one cello, multiple layered 'loops' hand tooled and shaped into lovely, cascading, provocative orchestral compositions with an immediate soul-rocking palpability. It's an amazing sound. Loop!Station is HOT. http://www.loopthis.com

Another fabulous show brought to you by David Kaye, Nightworld Figure.

Having just relocatec to Niles from Oakland--I have been looking fo a good haunt. I have heard a bit about the Mojo Lounge--apparantly they even have live music?! Anyone know what kinda brew they have on tap? Hope its not a Bud-Miller-Coors crap thing! And does the bar have good selection in spirits? So far, I have tried the Florence , which has a great atmosphere and quirkiness like an prohibition era tunnel--lots of bikers hang there and its gets crowded and I tried a sports brewpub called Jack,,which was good, but nuthin to write home about. Anyone gotta solid reccomend for the area?

"Spoken Groove" Returns to Crosstown Coffeehouse for their third Appearance December 2nd @ 7pm
1303 High Street
Alameda, CA 94501

$8 Cover charge and these guys are worth it!! This is one show not to be missed!!
www.Spokengroove.com

One voice, one guitar and the most incredible show youve ever seen. Peter Nevland and Paul Finley explode on stage with the energy and talent of the most original, rock n roll, acoustic guitar wizardry, funky white boy dancing, youve ever seen. These two performers - theyre more than poets - have taken spoken word and the art of poetry slam to new heights, raves the Santa Fe Reporter. An explosion of words, is the quotation of choice for the Dallas Morning News, lifting his arms one minute and kicking his legs the next. Since September, 2002, Peter and Paul have completed 6 tours across the U.S. And Canada and played for just about every audience imaginable. From rock hungry students to fine art lovers, inner city kids to white-collar businessman, no one can get enough of their Acoustic Spoken Groove.

Of course the most interesting aspect to them isnt so much where theyve played, but how they ended up working together. Music and writing was the last thing on Peters mind when he came to the University of Texas in 1993 to study Mechanical Engineering. When he did start writing, his performance was so inventive, bands started asking if they could play music for him while he unleashed his Dr. Seuss took a walk through the ghetto and decided to become the white, jive king style. It wasnt long before he met one of the most amazing guitarists hed ever seen in 2000 at an Austin Arts Festival.

Wisconsin-reared Paul Finley had been hooked by the guitar the first time his fingers touched the strings. At the age of 16, he began teaching, getting a diploma in Guitar Performance from the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, and joining his talents with the indie band, Mas Optica. Hes played with symphonies, comedy troupes, rock stars and buskers in his journey from Wisconsin to Austin. It was the perfect preparation for the turn his life was about to take as he gave Peter his card and told him to call if he wanted to do anything with music.

They finally played together a year later, realizing something instant and magical in what they were creating. After countless cities, open doors, wowed audiences, bad jokes and 7 CDs later, theyre set to take off as the folk apostles of the most original, acoustic funk machine, spoken groove combo ever experienced.

Premier of Stoner's Run @ the Parkway Theater

Attention everyone. I am an Oakland filmmaker and I want to announce the premier of my first feature length film, "Stoner's Run" at the historic Parkway Theater. Please mark you calendars and support you local filmmakers.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 14th 9:15pm
Parkway Theater
1834 Park Blvd.
Oakland, CA 94606
Admission: $3

Come to the screening and meet the cast and crew of this no-budget indie film. And if you had the fortune or misfortune to work on this film, come see the fruits of our labor. Stoner's Run is what indie filmmaking is all about. No money, just vision, heart and commitment.

"Stoner's Run" is about a modern day stoner who has it all. But while partying with his friends one weekend, it all comes crashing down. While trying to score some weed, Bradley and his friends set off for some good times, adventure, and of course, weed. Little do they know that they have caught the attention of narcoticsofficers who are hungry for a bust. This little adventure will turn into a journey of epic insignificance and we learn that the good times aren’t always so good.

I've heard they really know how to celebrate holidays, you know, in a Baggy's sort of way. Anyway, maybe I'll meet some of you down there!

LADIES AND GENTS: WATCH YOUR DRINKS

This was posted by a friend on another tribe who had this happen to her at a bar down in Santa Cruz. She wasn't the only one. Apparently, this has been happening a lot lately so be careful out there:

>I was dosed by some fucker on Wednesday @ Government Mule. Some dickhead spiked my drink and I had one of the worse experiences of my life. It was horrifying to say the least.

>I still feel weird, shaky, very anxious and hollow inside. I don't know what it was - I was terrified, hallucinating, scared out of my mind.

>Please take care of yourselves, be aware of your surroundings, watch your drink and where you put it should you leave the immediate area - and if you ever, ever see someone dose someone's drink - DO SOMETHING. If I had been alone or riding my bike home, something fatal could have occurred as I was out of control, weeping and frightened beyond belief.

My friend is interested in finding a cool bar/pub for her birthday. Preferably someplace where a group of around 10 people could be together, or maybe if there is a small back room or something for us to hang out in. The only place I could think of was Luka's. Any other ideas? Oakland, Berkeley, Emeryville area is best.
Thanks!

I've been buried in work lately so it's been a bit since I've stepped out for more than movie and dinner. So I can use a bit of advice about where to go. Little sis is 26, a bit of a party girl, likes R&B, house, world beat, soul and bascially anything with a steady beat that you can dance to. Any suggestions?

I think there's more interest in a friday night or saturday afternoon to evening crawl. Does that fit better in your schedule?
I'd recommend the first friday in august- up and down telegraph. That's also art murmur so it will be a night of craziness.

So, here is what I propose:
Bike Bar Crawl,
Friday AUGUST 4th, 7pm til ????
where do we meet? what places should we attempt to hit?

I'm looking for a Pee Wee Herman suit in a real bad manner. So far I have been hitting up vintage clothing shops, costumes stores, and thrift stores all to no avail. I am desperately looking for one, and would like to not have to shell out an arm and a leg for it. If there is anyone out there who can point me in the right direction I would greatly apprecaite it!

Come freak out and dance yer asses off Saturday, July 15th
3 amazing bands--The Shudders,The Floating Corpses and Crime and Punishment Also DJ's and more galore $5--donation--all ages!!!
9pm @Reverend Mother Flash's wherehouse in Oakland
1190 28th street
at the corner of 28th street and magnolia. google it.

After you get over the bridge take I-580 E / CA-24 / DOWNTOWN OAKLAND / HAYWARD-STOCKTON
When the different highways start branching off take the downtown 880 one and get off at your first exit which will be 27th street/ west grand ave. Go strait (you'll be riding underneath the freeway) until you get to west grand ave. Then make a right. Go stait for aprox. 10 blocks to adeline st. then make a right and go up to 28th street. All the streets are even numbered. take a left on 28th street and end a block over at magnolia. My place is a peach building with cracks in it. It's easier than I probably make it sound but these are correct directions.

If taking bart you take pitsburg bay point or Richmond train to Macauthur bart station. When you exit the station you'll be on 40th street. Walk 4 blocks west on 40th street to Market street and catch the ..88 bus going south to 28th st. and adeline. When on 28th street go one block west to magnolia.

If on a bike then it's easier. Get off at west Oakland bart (which is on 7th street) and ride up to 28th street then go east 4 blocks to magnolia

It's a ways off sure, but how often does 06/06/06 come- like once a milennium?? (6/6/2066 doesn't count....)
And it's a Tuesday- an unlikely satanic day.
I think we should celebrate it with ritual sacrifice of the liver- a bar/pub crawl around Lake Merritt, starting at 6pm, at Lukas.
More details to follow.

For those who haven't seen this announcement elsewhere, CANCEL your plans for Friday night. DON'T go to SF when you can go to Oakland instead!

Have you ever seen
LORD LOVES A WORKING MAN? (9-piece "white soul"/blues band)
JAPONIZE ELEPHANTS? (huh? How do you describe them?)
KNEES & ELBOWS? (See Janay Growden use her beautiful voice to shatter your concept of blues and jazz)

Maybe these bands bring back old memories. The good old days. Remember? Maybe you were so stoned you don't remember seeing any of them. Have you ever thought about seeing all three of these bands together in one place?

Friday night you have that opportunity. Who could ask for more?

Friday May 26, 2006 <--- THIS FRIDAY NIGHT!

Save Café van Kleef – Thu 5/25 3pm hearing in Oaklandl - or email if you can’t make it

One of my favoritest bars/nightspots in Oakland is in jeopardy and needs support for their application for a caberet license. Cafe van Kleef was a pioneer in Oakland's nightlife revitalization and provides a great venue for lots of local performers.

If you're not doing nuttin' on Thu 5/25 3pm, please come to a hearing in Oakland. If you're busy, please consider sending an email in support.

*******************************
On Thursday May 25th at 3:00 pm in Oakland City Hall, Hearing Room 2, there will be a public hearing to determine if Peter can continue to provide live music at Café Van Kleef.

Peter’s new landlords have been trying to stop him from giving local artists a place to play for the past few months. The landlords are expected to appear at the hearing and send letters opposing the music scene at CVK. This would not only hurt the Café, but the musicians that regularly play there.

If you want to be heard you are welcome at the public hearing. If you can’t make it but would like to support there being art and entertainment in the Arts and Entertainment district, you can call or send an e-mail to Barb Killey, the hearing officer that will be deciding whether Oakland will allow live music to continue at CVK. If you plan on coming you might want to let her know so that they have a big enough room reserved.

Please send comments to:

An related article from the East Bay Express:
"Saloon guy" Peter Van Kleef fights for his bar's survival.
By Will Harper Article Published Apr 19, 2006 http://www.eastbayexpress.com/Issues/2006-04-19/news/bottomfeeder.html

For nearly three years, Cafe Van Kleef has played a proud role in the hipsterization of uptown Oakland with its funky art and funky jazz performances. Now, the future of the little bar that could is in doubt: Peter Van Kleef says his new landlords have spent the past few months trying to kick him out, citing trumped-up reasons. "I'm so tired of this," he sighs. "I'm a saloon guy and that's all I want to do. I don't really want to deal with this."

"This" all started after a consortium of eight partnerships bought the building at 1621 Telegraph Avenue last fall. Van Kleef says things quickly soured during his initial sit-down with some of the owners. According to Van Kleef, they wanted him to give them his basement and mezzanine space. He was willing to do so only if he could get something in return — like the space next door, so he could expand. Ever since he resisted their demand, Van Kleef says they've been trying to get rid of him.

But that won't be easy: The bar owner has a 25-year lease, which he negotiated with his previous landlord. So, he says, the new landlords began raising dubious allegations showing him to be in violation of that lease. They claimed, for instance, that patrons were smoking inside the bar, which he denies. Last month, they sent him an eviction notice for hosting live-music shows without the cabaret license required from the city. As it turns out, Van Kleef was indeed violating city rules, although the bar owner says that no one made an issue of it until the new owners came along.

One of the owners, Stephen DeJesse, denies that he or his partners have been waging a campaign to get rid of the bar. DeJesse says everyone knew when they bought the building that Van Kleef, with his superlong lease, would come with the package. "He's more of an asset than a detriment to this area," DeJesse allows.

DeJesse says the building owners have been trying to get Van Kleef to address various safety hazards, particularly fire risks like bad electrical wiring that is not up to code. In a March 31 letter to City Administrator Deborah Edgerly, DeJesse expressed concerns that the pub's live shows attract large crowds even though the place has only one exit. DeJesse invoked the specter of the Great White concert in Rhode Island — where a fire killed 100 people — as something that could repeat itself at Cafe Van Kleef.

Van Kleef's lawyer Thomas Ostly questions DeJesse's purported safety concerns, noting that Van Kleef has never been cited by the city for code violations. The lawyer also dismisses any comparisons to the Rhode Island tragedy, which resulted from pyrotechnics fired off at a heavy metal show. The jazz musicians who play at Van Kleef typically don't blow up shit during their performances.

Ostly says the owners have backed off on their last eviction threat. In the meantime, Van Kleef has applied for a cabaret license from the city so he can keep offering live music. Good thing for him that he has friends in high places: Cafe Van Kleef happens to be one of Mayor Jerry Brown's favorite neighborhood watering holes. Last year, for instance, he spontaneously showed up during an Express bash there. Brown's press secretary, Gil Duran, also has been known to stop by for a cocktail once in a while and has clearly taken Van Kleef's side of the landlord-tenant dispute: "They're acting like Peter's stockpiling WMDs or harboring al-Qaeda," he says.

Combining folklore, mythology, Lovecraftian monsters and pop-culture parody, Shadow Circus Creature Theatre has been one of San Francisco's most popular and outrageous puppetry troupes since it's formation in 2000. Using life-sized latex and foam creatures Shadow Circus creates a world that is utterly fantastic, and yet hilariously similar to our own.

When lab monkey Klaus Von Chimpenstein predicts an 8.2 magnitude earthquake in San Francisco, Kafka (the radioactive cockroach) and Hatchet (the streetwise velociraptor) remain unflustered. Little do they know that a much bigger disaster also awaits them - the mob-like thugs of FEMA, who are sent in to collect all the poor. Can Hatchet & Kafka escape the clutches of Bush’s relief efforts? Find out March 10th at the Stork Club!

Hope to see you there!

The other bands are: Rockward, The Bruises, and The Buckets and they are filming for a video. Mike's band goes on first and he asked me to spread the word as he'd love to see some of his new Tribe friends there. I'll probably show up around 9:30 pm.

Hope to see some of y'all there!

Yeah yeah yeah, I know its a Hallmark holiday, but was just wonderin' if anyone wanted to go have a few pitchers Tuesday night($2 off on Tuesdays), if'n you have no other plans?

Otherwise, the Tuesday after that could work...

I can't get there any Tuesdays until around 8ish, but I'm sure anyone could get there and snag a big table whenever. =)

So, Tuesday the 14th or Tuesday the 21st??

Anyone? Bueller, Bueller?!

Oh Hunter! We knew you too well, yet not well enough.

We knew the gears in your mind, but not those in your heart. Unless your heart and your mind were in lock-step, which, on further reflection, was probably the case.

Hunter! The United States of America Misses You! You left too soon and in the middle of a furious war.

Our own Vice President has shot a friend in the face.

We have Fallen So Far. It's funny "Boo hoo" not funny "Ha ha" at this point. The possibilty of our doom is just a fantasy. Certainty has set in. It's awful. I am almost glad you did not live to see this, even as much as I miss you.

On Saturday, February 25th, we should gather together in Style and Manner. The details are not clear yet, but I miss you too much to let the anniversary of your sharp absence slip past without so much as a shot of Wild Turkey down my throat. It's just not possible. We must gather and call your spirit down. We must rise and see your spirit up.

Costumed Walnut Creek Crawl

starting off where that other thread was going, we should organize a costumed Walnut Creek crawl. So, what would both be fun, and would challenge the Iran/Contra Costa County suburbanites' sense of reality?

the obvious, tried and true, yet shocking to the bridge and tunnel crowd, you already have the cotume ideas:
Santa
Bunny
Burner
Pirate
Clown

the less obvious, more interesting to us because we haven't done it before, take some time to put the costume together, cause you always need more outfits for burning man ideas:
Barnyard
Alien
Historical Figure
Wizard of Oz
Leprachaun

add some more, attack those on the list, what have you.

The great thing about Walnut Creek is that there are a lot of no cover bars in a small area. The problem will be getting home once drunk. Anyone live out there and can handle a bunch of Drunken Costumed Freaks?

Transmission Jazz with Colin Stetson THIS Saturday 2/4/06

Coming to everybody's favorite rock and roll dive, the almost world famous Stork Club:

TRANSMISSION is the avant groove jazz band fronted by sax player Colin Stetson. Colin has performed on the David Letterman show, and he and bassist Eric Perney have appeared on numerous CDs including the Tom Waits CDs "Alice" and "Blood Money".

Colin now lives in New York, so this is one of those rare semi-annual shows for the Transmission Trio. This will be their only Eastbay show this trip.

Transmission Trio and Transmission Quintet (adding guitarist Roger Riedlbauer and trumpeter Ara Anderson) will perform on this show. You've GOT to catch these guys if you want to hear some of the best jazz performers anywhere. Seriously.

Opening for Transmission is/are the BOXCAR SAINTS, a bluesy band fronted by Dave Hudson (recently profiled in a cover story in the SF Weekly) singing about hard life experiences in the Midwest. (And you think you've had it rough...)

Quotes about Transmission:

"...Theirs is a swaggering, unruly gait; a mini-Mingus band, blues and roots and lord knows what else." -- BBC

"...Transmission blows audiences away with high energy music that nearly defies description."-- The Current

"Transmission Trio's avant-garde fusion of improvisational or "free" jazz, hip hop and rock reeks of uber-cool, smoke-filled lounges where well-cocktailed cats and kittens talk art, existentialism and other such heavy things." --SF Examiner

SHOW DETAILS:
