Looking to start up a new club night in the East Bay. Right now, probably just a monthly event. Looking for suggestions on a venue to do this at. Have looked at a few, but none of them feel right so far.
The ideal venue would be:
• In Oakland, Emeryville or Alameda
• Receptive to having a club promoter come in and take over a night (including charging a cover), am willing to discuss a bar guarantee
• Not too big, not too small. Ideally would hold about 100 people and feel packed with that many
• Small dance floor. Limited dj equipment or sound system ideal, but can provide my own
• Outside smoking patio (ideal, but not required)
• Open minded, or at least tolerant of gay people and people who like to dress up in funny costumes
• Easy to work with owners. Don't want a venue that will kick the chair out in front of me while I'm loading in something heavy

Fri, May 9, 2008 - 2:07 PMWhere have you looked so far? What you described sounds exactly like The Uptown.

Re: Venue suggestions for a new East Bay club night
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 2:13 PMI've looked at the uptown, even talked to the owner.
Might be a little too big (can probably hold about 400 if you count the upstairs area), plus the owner wants a pretty hefty bar guarantee for a weekend ($1500+). Sounded like he might be willing to negotiate if we were really into having pink floyd cover bands. Not really my thing. -

Fri, May 9, 2008 - 2:15 PMAlso looked at the Oasis. Same problem. With 100 people, would still feel empty... With 60 people even more so. Want some place I could have about 50 people (or more ideally, but realistic expectations I want to start small), and not loose money on a bar minimum. -

Re: Venue suggestions for a new East Bay club night
Sat, May 31, 2008 - 4:34 AMArmando's
707 Marina Vista, Martinez (downtown)
about a block from the Amtrak station, and they have a bus to BART
won't hold 100 people
live music Thursday, Friday, Saturday, sometimes Sunday
excellent sound, always live mixed by someone who knows what they're doing
cover typically $8, beer $4, full glass of good wine $6. Nobody's getting rich.
voted Diablo Magazine's 2007 Most Eclectic Night Out
Open Mic 1st Thursday, Blues Night 2nd Monday (cover $3 for open mic(i think) & blues night(i'm sure))
www.martinezvibes.com/armandos
I'm there at least twice a week because a) I've know Roy aka Armando for quite a while, b) I absolutely love live music, c) the sound is righteous, d) I live about a mile away, e) it's a great venue for local talent, and f) you have to support local venues that support local musicians or else there won't be places like this. -

Wed, June 11, 2008 - 10:11 AMEli's on MLK in Oakland.
will hold 100 people, there's an outdoor patio. -

Re: Venue suggestions for a new East Bay club night
Wed, June 11, 2008 - 3:30 PMI thought Eli's was pretty exclusive to live bands.
Great space, but would they be receptive to a bunch of homos and a dj?

Re: Venue suggestions for a new East Bay club night
Wed, June 11, 2008 - 3:33 PMThanks for the tip. I'll check out Kitty's. But from a quick look at their web site, they seem to have a pretty established schedule, and pretty established regular crowd (hip-hop). But maybe that's just the impression they want to give, and they are kinda slow and receptive to new business!
Do love Emeryville. Still growing, lots of potential!
