Does anyone know wazup with the King's X on Piedmont Ave./Pleasant Valley?

I noticed a change of ownwership/alcohol sign in the window a month or so ago.

Thursday 11/17, I noticed a van from Bob's Bamboo out front.

Could this be the makings of a Tiki Bar?

I rode by there last night around 6:30. No lights on. No Kings X sign. just a dark corner on the way to the cemetary.
Good location for an Irish wake.
But a tiki bar?? well, OK. I guess there are dead people in Hawaii.

Why the change of ownership? The last owners got tired of catering to the mid 80's era clientele that was trying to relive the late 70's arena rock era? Every time I walked in there I felt like I stumbled on a D and D meet up.

I drove by there today - there's wood panels partially covering some of the windows but the door was open and people seemed to be in there working on it. King's X signs are still up.

Yes. Kings X is gone after what, 30 years?

It has always been just a pitstop for me. Friendly people though.

Drove by there today. People were working on the place.
I saw their large stained glass window that says "Brooklyn Steam Beer" proped up in the garage.

Serious injection of Money going on.

King's X did kind of have that 80's feel to it but it was always a reliable neighborhood pit bar if you wanted to shoot some pool or watch some sports. I hope they don't change it too much.

i was googling and found a listing on some tiki bar search site ( they really do have everything on the internet) that a tiki bar is going to open there called the "kona club" owned by the "mallard" people...again this was found on some tiki bar search site so i'm not sure how valid the info is...:)

      Noe, thanks for the info.

I found a thread about the Kona Club (formerly King's X) on www.tikiroom.com

well, it will be a lot roomier than the one on college, which the name escapes me at this point.

I hope it sticks around longer than Venus in Las Vegas- that one is now a strip club operated by Vivid- some XXX porn company(?).
but That's kinda far away from local piedmont ave. Just threw it in there.
The location is at the top of piedmont and does not get a lot of foot traffic so it has to have some kind of draw to it, and a tiki bar might do it, at least in the beginning. Will they work with the parkway like the one on college does?

          Yeah Tiki Trek.

I am not really into Tiki Bars.
But when a warm wind blows, and my thirst needs quenching, I head to Trader Vic's.
Oh yeah I have to be in the right mood to spend $9.- $13. In the East Bay.
          No offense intended.

Well, I hope their idea works.

The old crowd there will surely miss $5 pitchers of Pabst and $2 Bud's.................

The old crowd will just move along to Eggbert Soses at the other end of piedmont or the kerry house in the middle or george kayes on broadway and 41'st.

nice butt by the way- did you grow it yo seff?

Waaaa! That sucks. That place was like a welcoming committee to California for me.

Trivia matches back in the day. The after game hang out on softball nights. A comfortable neighborhood place for watching a game on tv with a beer and a shot (or several). Quite often a bit of caberet.

A tip o the glass to the X.

I have not been to the Kerry House (Wrinkle Room) in years.

I think it was the owners, so probably to his garage.

George Okeefes perhaps. Not many regular bars left.

How do tiki bars justify their hugely overpriced drinks? Are we paying for the weird names and fruit and little umbrellas and things? I'd rather pound back cheap martinis.....

what do you do with the interior if the Tiki theme fails, cause people do not want to pay $8 - $12?

Wonder if they have a Caberet License?

Well if it is owned by the Mallard crowd it may just be cause they love the theme. Not the over priced drinks. They may be reasonably priced...
  • Re: King's X

    Tue, November 29, 2005 - 2:53 PM
can anyone explain why i'm strangly excited about a tiki bar?
it must be my inner rat packer, wanting to live in a time when loafing at the beach and drinkin' 'brella drinks was all one had to do with one's day.

i smell a tribe field drink to investigate this delightful place with overpriced 'brella/pinapple drinks when it opens,
it would at least chase away these rainy days a bit...

and then we can wait for the place to close and reopen as a decent pub and go back for a guinness.

I agree with suga...we should have a tribe gathering at this new place.
      • Re: King's X

        Tue, November 29, 2005 - 8:25 PM
A tiki bar is a bar that has a Hawaiian/ south pacific/Polynesian vibe and decor to it. Somehow swanky vintage bachelor pad fits the bill too. But if the bar is in hawaii it's not a Tiki Bar- it's just a bar in Hawaii. That's from the mouth of the bartender in the Conga Room many drinks ago.
And sometimes overpriced drinks in Tiki glasses are part of the decore which sometimes become unoffical souveniers, like all those pint glasses you hide from your spouse. or mom.

I saw tiki torches alfame beside the door last night. I was driving by, around, maybe 10-10:15pm.
Is it open? The windows look like they are still papered over and there isn't a sign proclaiming it's the Kona club.

i went last night! there were just the 2 tiki torches outside and it was silent but we figured we'd try the door - once it opened you could hear the music inside. there's a mechanical hula dancer, blowfish lamps, steam volcano, etc. they only have sierra on tap so far but they have bottled beer and a full bar. seemed like it's priced the same as stuff at the mallard.

I guess I have to drag myself in there.
None of friends want to go there because of the Mallards connection.

Anyone know where the former Bartenders (Curtis & Jim) went?

I see Curtis driving around, but have not been able to catch with him.

on the side of the street with the pool hall. not the conga lounge side.
from the outside it almost looks like a barn.

It may be small, but that's what I like about it. It feels like you're in a friend's basement tiki bar....plus they make a great Mai Tai!! and you can eat pizza

I went to the bar last night with a group. The decor was nice but kind of shoddily thrown together. I liked the hula girl, volcano, and puffer fish lamps though. I really wasn't very impressed with their watered down and expensive drinks. Also, they played modern music which didn't fit. I think a tiki bar should have music that matches the theme. The only beer on tap was Sierra. Oh god, they had this table, the only one large enough to accomodate our group, that was stupidly covered in black sand that scraped the shit out of any thing you put on it. I had to get a newspaper so I could rest my elbows on it without ripping the shit out of my shirt. That was a poorly thought out idea. All in all, I wasn't impressed in the least with the Kona Club. It's a tired shtick which won't hold up on its own.

Sounds like a Lifes Dream. But they didn't pour enough money into the Bar Hole to make it all groovy and right on and fengshui'ed out in the traditional tikiness. You gotta do it right- fromt he vintage decor to the tiki drink glasses to the loungy background music. the Conga Room gets it. And their drinks are cheap, and there's a good couple of brews on tap and in bottles. and you can order form Rustica and they run it upstairs for you.

It's not like there aren't any consultants who can point them in the right direction.
Still- I wanna check it out. It seems big enough for it to be a fairly decent place for live acts- do they have a cabaret liscence?

Even though its not a tiki place, if you want the most mai tai bang for your buck, go to McNalleys on friday or saturday, BEFORE 6. there should be a bartender there with a full grey beard, grey hair. He makes mai tais in pint glasses, and let me tell you, if you can drink 3, your well on your way to smash-o-rama. And the price is extremly right.

I went in there about a week and a half ago. It was pretty empty and really creepy... it was very clean and classy for a tiki bar, not at all the kitchy weird thing you'd expect, but kind of like if a posh bar went tiki. And they weren't playing tiki music.

      That bar was never posh.
I'm not liking this establishment more and more and I haven't even set foot in it.
Maybe it needs to age gracefully for 30 years before it becomes what we want it to be. Think the investors want to wait that long?

The word that I heard, even before the sale of the X, is that the owner was not happy with the late night clientel.
        Possibly a sales point?
        Merchants Association?
I did not notice the previous owner investing in this change, except for a couple of couches & chairs. Oh yeah, they got rid of a pool table.

Seems to me that the new owners are patiently awating the evolution of patrons to evolve.

Although I have not set foot in the establishment that props its door open with a plastic bucket and a burned out tiki torch, it appears that they do not need valet parking.

I wonder what their time span is for making a profit?

I wish they would do something tempting to lure me in. LOL

Right now, I just have the interest of curiosity.................................

They got rid of the pool table? now there is NOTHING to draw anyone in that cave.
The new owners should embrace the D and D/ Gaming clientel and use their lifestyle as a theme. Kinda like a Mideival Times bar (instead of the resturaunt chain) without the sharp pointy jousting sticks- that won't mix with a bunch of drunks.
          Or maybe it will.

Well, I went to the Kona. Different. Kinda feels like a Tiki Cave.

Looks like they ran out of money in the middle of their remodle.

Definately a Do It Yourself Job. Very unprofessional.

Same old nicked up chairs. Some strange Black Sand Tables (Rebecca mentioned this).
They got rid of the Pool Room, the Pool Table now sits there.

I think that the reason that they leave the door open is because of the Nasty Smell. Possibly a combination of Rotting Bamboo and Wolfscmidt Vodka?

Nice Bartender. Horrible drinks. We left after our first round. My one friend wanted to take my tip ($5.) away from the Bartender.

                    Sorry about sounding negative.

I will give the Kona another try. With a good crowd and some good music, the place could be OK.

                    BYOB..................

I was there fri night for a half hour or so. Very tiki like with all the bamboo, but homemade looking, which isn't necessicarily bad, but sometimes it looks cheezy with the lack of detail that shows. The place still looks like a cave since they covered the windows with walls of bamboo. They should think of filling the windows with something to draw perople in there as it still looks closed down. Sierra was on tap. not much else going on.
would I go there again? well only with a bunch of people so ewe can move somewhere else .

This is today's totally random hijack just to make the observation of how amazingly different it sounds when 'we' gets an 'e' put in front of it.

ok, now that I got that out of my system, I return you to your Kona Cross critiquing.

Grammar nazi? moi? ha! If you only knew.... I was just making an observation on the oddities of the English language since I just started helping people who are learning English, and I'm learning how hard it is due to weird things like the difference in sounds of the words WE & EWE...which I just felt like sharing since I thought it was interesting. Thanks for reminding me to never do THAT again.

I know what you mean. I've been to Kona twice now and I've been dissapointed twice. That's why when I'm in the mood for tiki, I go to Conga Lounge. I was there on Friday and had a blast, as always. They have a new bartender - some guy from Trader Vics in San Francisco - drinks were incredible. He made me a Zombie which kicked ass!! It's also close to BArt, which is nice. I met friends of mine from SF who were able to Bart it over and walk to Conga Lounge. Their fiery Scorpion drink in the bowl looked great. I'm getting that next!!

Oh yeah, the Trader Vic's Scorpion. I've had a few of those in my day. They go down easy but boy are they P-P-Potent. I once asked the bartender what was in it and he said "pretty much everything in the bar....and fruit juice." Drinking it from a bowl with a straw doesn't help...
