On the corner of San Pablo and Solano. I moved to the neighborhood right when they closed down for the remodel, and haven't checked it out since they reopened. Any opinions?

I haven't stepped foot inside since Bill sold the place. I don't think I'll be able to for awhile, I loved that place. It's the only bar that's ever been "my bar". I've seen so many awesome bands over the 15 years I hung out there. Sad. But I'd love to hear what the scoop is with it, as well. It think the people who own Kingman's Lucky Lounge operate it now.

I live in the neighborhood too, but I haven't been in there yet. I've been told, though, that the new Ivy Room is very much a lounge, with stuffed chairs, ferns and carpet. Someone compared it to a hotel bar, without the hotel. And a "professional" bartender. Just about everything the old place wasn't. I don't really see the need to go into a place like that.

I wasn't ever a big fan of the old Ivy, being more of a Pub guy (the Pub on Solano), but at least the place felt like people hung out there.

Well, in general probably so, but some customers are real freakin' cheapskates. For some reason, one of the warning signs is the types who announce they tip well.

I'm just a customer, not a bartender, but I've seen it.

I haven't set foot in the Ivy Room since it changed hands. I used to love that stage, and the bands that played there. So where do people like to go for drinks in the daytime? My regular bar is George Kaye's in Oakland, but I only like Dave and Ted, who work nights.

The Ivy Room used to be mighty funky, but I had a good time maybe 60% of the time. I am curious to see what its like now.

I think someone didn't want any East Bay Bar and Pub owners to know that they would intentionally sicken someone by putting visine in their drink if they didn't tip them what they thought they deserved. Not the best way to go about finding new bartending job, in my opinion.

i think someone spends too much time on the internet twisting words and creating a much more interesting personality for herself, rather than being an interesting person in the real world.

Right, threatening to sicken people for not tipping your pathetic ass is EVER SO interesting. You're a fucking sickening piece of human detritus. And who's the one who went crying to have your postings removed? Certainly wasn't me. Afraid someone you want to work for might see that you were fired for harrassing cutomers for not tipping you? Pretty lame.

And as to Tribing much, yes, I do. And I enjoy it greatly. I also have a ful-time job. How about you? Oh yeah! That's right! You were fired from the Ivy Room!

              You guys...

It's getting to be about time to plan a little get-together, innit?
I'm out of commission for the next coupla weeks, so maybe sometime right around mid-February or so.

In another tribe, spy was saying we should boycott the Ivy Room, and that we should party at her house instead.

Spy, you still in this tribe?

                    Still wanna host?

I was actually being semi-facetious cause I've never been there myself...

Wherever would work! Spy's would be a fantastic make the peace pow-wow place or perhaps anywhere else, but bottom line, a locale for a soiree is indeed a goal we should aim for...

any other new bars in town that could stand a crowd on an off night?

                        hi everybody.
glad i could spice it up a bit for ya.
sorry the real life story isn't nearly as exciting as this fantastic thread.
i did say to boycott ivy, but it was following weeks of promoting the ivy. i was fired without warning for asking a customer why he wasn't tipping me. my "boycott the ivy, party at my house" comment was posted only on the nimby tribe, and was meant as a joke. haha. i've never put visine in a drink, and most customers love me.
thanks for inviting me to your get together, i hope you have a blast. go to the ivy. it's beautiful, and the drinks are good.

Wow...for my first query on this tribe, this thread sure got a lot of attention! Thanks for all the---ahem---input, everyone.

So, you all get together and pub crawl regularly? I don't know where your last shindig was, but the Mallard is always fun, in case y'all end up hating the Ivy room, its only a block or two away. Speaking of this particular neighborhood, I'm told "Pub" on Solano Ave is also pretty cool. Any other op/eds?
                          • Re: The New Ivy Room?

We try to get together as regularly as we can. It's been awhile! What with the holiday season ending and other crazy shit going on around us. As Ali said, we're due!

The Pub is awesome. We've had some fun get-together there. Not much room, more of a mellow, in front of the fire with a pipe and Scrabble type atmosphere. Mallrd is cool, too. But I think their drink prices are a bit steep for being in Albany. I think I was charged like 8 bucks for a small mixed drink. It adds up when you tip a dollar on every drink. But, it is fun. And more affordable if you just drink beer. <bloat>

Ali throws great shingdigs. Is April Foolignas happening again this year? Of course we should get together before then, but that's always something to look forward to.

Oh gosh, it IS getting to be almost 'fooligans time again, huh?

Hmm, 4/1 is on a Sunday this year...maybe an all-day-into-evening event this go-round.
That might be nice for a change.

But, yes, a get-together before that would be in the cards.

Welcome....enjoy it while it lasts, its only a matter of time before everyone else catches on. As far as the bar scenario and the Ivy Room, I live north El Cerrito and there is a little shanty hole in the wall called Cliffs that has 50cent pool and a very, very chill atmosphere. Good local hole in the wall for those in the area.

Okay so I went to the Ivy room last night, and I am still in shock!! I thought I was in SF! The decor and everything else is completely different than the old Ivy room. I have to say I liked it, but not completely. I liked the fact that it is much more open and it has wall to wall carpeting and a ton of couches. But it doesnt have that blue collar feel to it at all anymore. Definitely a lounge type experience. The bartender was nice, but a little blah, maybe on the weekends the bartenders are a little more upbeat. They dont have any beers on tap!!!! I found that really wierd. Sometimes I feel like beer and sometimes I feel like a mixed drink, but no beers on tap, that is really lame. The DJ was ok. He was spinning some old and new Hip Hop. There were only 6 other people in the place and I think half were the dj's friends and the other half were the bar back's friends. But I cant really judge it yet seeing that I went on a Wednesday night. I will check it out on the weekend and see what it is really about.

As someone who has long been a patron of the old Ivy Room, it's simply sad to see how NICE the new place looks. Nice or not, it lacks the energy and stankiness that made the old Ivy so desireable. The new Ivy feels like the lobby of a hotel... plus, there is this really hard bench in there that looks like leather, and when you go to sit your ass excitedly down on it, it goes CRACK! Ouch... my ass doesn't like that bench, or the new Ivy Room. And, for the record, Spy was a great bartender there. Without her, the place will surely suffer.

They carpeted the floors? Where the hell is Stuart going to tap dance now? Bastards! And no beer on tap, ugh! Thery'e never going to last. The Ivy was called the 'Divey' for a reason. All the old timers are completely displaced now, too, I bet. If people want mixed drinks, they can go down to the Mallard where it's less stuffy AND they have beer on tap.

there are a few regulars who had been coming around, but honestly i think it's because they are so steeped in habit, they are having a hard time going somewhere else. there are two inparticular that are so so uncomfortable with the new diggs, but come anyways. one guy carries a plastic bag full of old newspapers and wears a fishing hat. he drinks pbr in bottle. sweet guy. the other has been called "the ghost of the old ivy" because he comes in several times a night walks around and then leaves. i have seen him 20 times, but he has never had a drink. he is tall, thin, and seemingly confused. stewart, on the other hand, is tack sharp. he was my FAVORITE customer. he was always dropping pearls on me, some cool bead of wisdom. love him.

Hey Rebecca - did you post a while back that you normally tip a buck on an 8 dollar drink? Isn't that pretty light?
                          • Re: The New Ivy Room?

                            Mon, January 29, 2007 - 12:12 AM
No, I tip a buck a drink, which usually costs about 4-5 (I usually drink beer). Do the math and tell me if that's light. Normally, I don't pay 8 bucks for a drink, which was the point, especially not in some bar in Albany. But you can go ahead and trivia mine my posts to try to make it out like I'm cheap if it makes you feel better. I tip because I want to, not because I have to. I'm a working class woman myself, but I get a bonus, not tips. And my bonus is a mere 5% of my salary which is perfectly fine by me. And I certainly wouldn't be bitching if it were 18-20%.
                            • Re: The New Ivy Room?

How is a buck for an 8 dollar drink light? because it's not 15-20% ?

Where does it say bartenders should get the same tip as resturaunt servers?

As a matter of fact who started the whole tipping thing anyway? I pay whatever outrageous amount for a drink or for a haircut, why do I have to tip? isn't it covered in their salaries? I mean I don't get tipped when I perform my job? And I don't get bonuses either! So i want to know why do people have to tip people for doing their jobs?

Don't get me wrong I tip, but still aren't you all curious?

oh and my point on the $8 /$1 ratio, if you drink enough $8 drinks those dollar tips per drink even out

a lot of bar tenders and waiters in europe pull down a good salary. they go to 'waiter' school, take all sorts of classes for it.
Compare that to the US, where it's something you do to work through school, for way below minimum wage and you are expeced to live off of tips, ie, the generosity of others. And we all know how generous we are around here. we are all struggling too. It sucks. the Working Persons real wages have actually decreased over the years.

and by the way, I tip based on what I can afford and how I'm treated. Prompt, respectful, gracious, well intentioned? Good tip. Rushed, unreasonable rudeness, sloppy? You're lucky I don't drink and run.

I have been to the new Ivy 3 times now. $3 well coctails and $2 pabst all night. The bartender s(mike and Tara) are both really nice people. I have a new fave pub in the hood after happy hour at T-rex is done. Have not stayed for the music yet and the bathrooms are waaaay better than the old Ivy. I miss the stage and old bar the most.

Hey, I looked at your photos and you DO look familiar. We must've run into each other being old timers there...well, not as much as Stuart. Haha! :) I'm sure we probably danced together. I used to dance my ASS off at Sound Boutique. Man, that was fun. Those guys were the BEST djs ever. Be sure and join us when we plan an outing!

And no, not a nurse. I wish. Just a former Cal Anthropology student who now recruits doctors for a livng.

P.S. Larry and I used to be roommates.

Sorry ya'll but I just couldnt keep up with the barrage of oneliners in this thread...I read as many as I could but anyway...

I lived in El Cerrito from 1997 to 2001 and the Ivy was the closest bar to me so I hit that place so many times. I rode my bike there, it was awesome..I never really had to worry about DUI's. I like to call the old Ivy an alchoholic's bar...because that is pretty much what it was. The ladies behind the bar knew how to make good stiff drinks. Drinks were on the cheap side too. I can clearly remember when thursday nights started getting pretty hot at the ivy and jacob was spinnin' classic 80's tunes a few years ago...thats when I knew the Ivy was on its way down to becoming another trendy bar and no longer the dive I came to love.

I have my own dive to frequent these days and I'm not telling you where it is! I rather keep my pints under 3 dollars!

Well...the later 90's was when it starting getting all 'PBR hipster with my $45 trailer trash t-shirt' style starting with Jacob and Sean at the decks (not that they had anything to do with it, cool dudes, all the way). Don't get me wrong, they kicked assed. I danced my ass of to Sound Boutique almost every Thurs. But back in 1992 was when it really hopped and they only had live blues, jazz. and rockabilly. Those were the fucking days. Bill's jukebox was the best I have ever seen. But once the DJ thing started, it got mobbed by college students and started losing it's flavor. And after Dot died, it was just never the same, really. But that's just my crusty curmudeon opinion.

Anybody been in lately? It seems kinda lame from the website. www.kingmanscocktails.com/inside-IR.htm

But the Monday night bartender is cool, and I'll be going to the Ivy for the first time in many years on the 28th, because he booked my experimental music project (and a couple of awesome performers from Portland). sanfrancisco.tribe.net/event/...f7083f7

I'm kind of expecting a similar alien world experience to when I first went into Amnesia in SF - which I used to hang out at when it was the Chameleon.
