Re: tequila
Sat, January 28, 2006 - 11:13 AMoh! I've been there. I remember the overpriced appetizers that were supposed to be our dinner split 6 ways. I didn't realize they were known for the tequila selection. Great waitstaff. -

Re: tequila
Mon, January 30, 2006 - 5:18 PMDona tomas has a pretty nice selection as well.

cuervo? gag..
la estrella, i think that's the name of the place, on 15th and international had an excellent tequila selection every time i've been there. a few that i hadn't seen outside of mexico before. that's just one spot i can remember off the top of my head.. there are many between the lake and high st.
personally, i don't like to mix yuppified environments with tequila consumption.

Tue, January 31, 2006 - 12:01 PMIf you're looking for variety, La Pinata in Alameda claims to stock 200 tequilas. They have other branches elsewhere in the East Bay as well. -

Re: tequila
Tue, January 31, 2006 - 1:12 PM*sigh* i have such a love hate relationship with the pinata...
i love that they are open late, aw yeah
and a block away from one of my favorite bars...
but i hate that the food just isn't very good.
a friend of mine always orders a grilled cheese and pretends he's at a diner :-)
i second the tequila selection anyway, it's a super busy place though try going at an off time -

Re: tequila
Tue, January 31, 2006 - 2:23 PMI heard the La Pinata in alameda has margarita pitchers for $5 or 6 bucks during happy hour. -

Re: tequila
Tue, January 31, 2006 - 4:38 PMHola compadres. I don't have any locations in the east bay that I can add.
What I rate places on as I try them is their Sangrita...the traditional chaser for tequila. (no...not Sangria!!! very very different stuff) A good tequila is a good tequila at any establishment, but a place that makes its own good fresh sangrita is a keeper.
And, no, I haven't found a place in the east bay yet that has a great one...but honestly I haven't been looking very hard either. Sounds like a good quest to start :) -

Oh! La Estrellita! I forgot about that place. They have a massive tequila selection, a full bar, and pretty good food, to boot. Just for the record, I wasn't suggesting Cesar's was a great place for tequila, I just remembered that I think they have alot of variety. It's certainly not a place with "tequila ambience." Personally, the only time I've had a good tequila experience was in Ensenada drinking Don Julio. -

Re: tequila
Tue, January 31, 2006 - 6:46 PMwell well well, this is a start.
Beer can bore the pallete sometimes and my nose can't reach that far up in the air to be comfortable at wine bars. All that swishing like mouthwash seems like a waste of a perfectly good glass of wine.
Tequila- that will be the drink for 2006. It's can be classy and under a highway onramp at the same time.
This sounds like another explorative endeavour for those with the right liver.

Re: tequila
Wed, February 1, 2006 - 11:03 AMwhats this sangrita made of?
i second la estrelleta on 12th, they have a pretty jumpin' bar at night and the food is decent. though i've only ever made it there for post drinking on sunday morning. it's a great place to go for breakfast as there is never a line...mmm, i hate waiting in line when i'm hung over -

Wed, February 1, 2006 - 12:36 PMSangrita & Tequila "Completo"
By Kate Heyhoe
In Mexico, order a "completo" and you'll be served two tall shot glasses: one of tequila and one of sangrita. Not to be confused with "sangria" (the fruit-laced wine beverage), sangrita is a vivid red, tangy drink made to be slowly sipped, alternating with sipis of a good quality tequila. (Sangrita means "little blood.")
In my travels, I've found two types of homemade sangrita. One version blends fresh tomato, orange and lime juices with a kick of chiles. The other is more similar to the pre-mixed bottled versions in that it mixes grenadine (a pomegranate-flavored syrup) with orange juice and chiles. Both are refreshingly good. Remember: When drinking a "completo" of tequila and sangrita, sip each glass slowly to savor the flavors.
Note:
You can also mix a tequila and sangrita cocktail, using 4 parts sangrita to 1 part tequila. Serve well chilled or on the rocks.

Anyone for a visit to La Estrellita sometime? -

Re: tequila
Wed, February 1, 2006 - 7:16 PMI love that place! (it's on E. 12th at 5th) My ex husband lives around the corner so we go have lunch and dinner there every now and then. They have live music on Fridays (Salsa) and Sundays (Jazz). And they're really nice!

Re: tequila
Sun, February 5, 2006 - 4:48 PMI make my sangrita with tomato juice, orange juice, lime juice, grenadine, and Tapatio. Most of the ones you get served are too tomatoey, or too hot, or too sour, or too sweet (all of the bottled ones are too sweet) Mine is a perfect balance of spicy, sour, sweet, and salty.
Someday I'll mix up a batch and foist it on all of you :)

Re: tequila
Tue, February 7, 2006 - 2:07 PMI like hitting up La Pinata for tequila. All their locations have a fat selection, but I enjoy the Alameda location the best. There maragaritas are legendary as well. -

Re: tequila
Tue, February 7, 2006 - 2:20 PMMy favorite after Dona Tomas. Somebody had mentioned the subpar food. The best way to get around this is to go to the San Leandro locatoin and get the shrimp cocktail that is big as your head. MMMmmmmm...
